ASHUK & MASHUK (Southern Anatolia)
ASHUK & MASHUK is a dance for entertainment purposes from the province of Mersin. Ashuk and mashuk, both historical folk show characters, are in love. The dance dramatizes the age old story of "boy meets girl." The costumes consist of makeup painted on the dancers' bodies, from their necks to their bellies, along with a body suit which completes the full costume. The makeup on their bodies exaggerates Ashuk and Mashuk's faces in courtship. At the end of dance, a brief performance by Zeki Maviyildiz follows with his wooden spoons.
